Summary

More than 200 referenced medical conditions affecting physical and mental health are associated with hormonal imbalances. Premenstrual Syndrome is characterized by a variety of symptoms triggered 7 - 14 days prior to menstruation. Symptoms can vary significantly from women to women and nearly two out of every five women aged between 14 and 50 experience some type of PMS. Symptoms occur from an imbalance in the complex hormonal changes that occur during a woman's menstrual cycle. the primary hormonal abnormality is that estrogen levels are increased and progesterone levels are decreased.

There are four common overlapping patterns of PMS.

PMS- A ( Anxiety )

PMS-A is the most common type of PMS and includes symptoms such as anxiety, irritability and emotional mood swings. PMS-A is associated with high estrogen levels and low progesterone levels.

PMS-C ( Carbohydrate cravings )

PMS-C includes symptoms such as increased appetite, a craving for sweets and wide swings in blood sugar levels. Headaches, palpitations, fatigue and fainting can also be experienced. Excessive insulin response, decreased levels of prostaglandins, low magnesium and high salt intake can all be culprits in this form of PMS.

PMS-D ( Depression )

PMS-D is the least common type of PMS and involves depression, insomnia, tearfulness, forgetfulness and mild confusion. A women with PMS-D may want to withdraw. This type of PMS is associated with low estrogen levels and higher progesterone levels, decreased neurotransmitters and an increase in adrenal androgen secretion.

PMS-H ( Hydration )

PMS-H involves bloating, water retention, breast tenderness, and weight gain due to increased aldosterone ( which causes fluid retention ), low levels of magnesium, excess salt or estrogen dominance.
