Summary
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that primarily affects the large, weight bearing joints and the joints in the hands. It is mainly seen in the elderly and is the most common form of arthritis.
Disease Process
Slow, progressive cartilidge deterioration is followed by hardening of the joints caused by calcification and bone spur formation. The joint cushion deteriorates whic leads to pain and limited movement of the joint.
Signs and Symptoms
- early morning joint stiffness
- loss or restriction of joint movement
- pain that is worse after use
- stiffness after periods of rest
- joint 'cracking' after movement
- tenderness and swelling in certain areas
- pain the joint around changes in weather
Possible Causes Or Contributing Factors
- age related - risk for osteoarthritis increases with age
- obesity
- genetic predisposition
- poor diet and lack of exercise over a long period of time
- skeletal defects
- homonal imbalances - joint degeneration increases after menopause
- nutritional imbalances - synovial fluid in joints is primarily protein
- food allergies and sensitivities
- local injury
- overuse of anti-inflammatory pain killers
